Why would I put CBD on the outside of my body; doesn’t CBD need to be ingested to work?
The simple answer to this question is no, it doesn’t. Cannabinoids like CBD can be effectively applied externally to the skin and hair. As one of the fastest growing ways of using cannabinoids, topicals include a wide classification of cannabinoid-infused products intended specifically for external use.
What Are CBD Topicals?
As more and more research is conducted on cannabinoids like CBD and the endocannabinoid system, newer ways to use cannabinoid-based products are being developed, including the use of one of our largest and most outward of organs — our skin.
CBD hemp oil topicals include balms, salves, lotions, and oils that are infused with active cannabinoids and applied to and absorbed directly through your skin. Topicals have soared in popularity in recent years, with cannabinoids like CBD making their way into everything from lip balms and body butters to cosmetics and skin and hair care products.
How Do Topicals Work?
Rather than ingesting CBD hemp oil orally, which will affect the whole body and can take up to 2 hours or more to fully experience the effects, the topical application of cannabinoids allows them to be absorbed directly into the affected area for faster and more focused onset of effects.
This minimally invasive method for CBD use often serves as a first point of contact between curious consumers and the hemp oil industry, making our travel salves an excellent tool for building interest in Kannaway and our products. Reluctant to ingest CBD oil, new users may be more willing to try external applications for their first time before moving on to oral CBD supplements.
Like all CBD hemp oil products, CBD oil topicals are non-psychoactive, and since the cannabinoids in these topicals interact with CB2 receptors near the skin, activating the endocannabinoid system, they are never absorbed into the bloodstream.
Because human skin has a low absorption rate for cannabinoids, application needs to be heavy enough to overcome this barrier. This is why most topicals suggest applying “liberally” to the affected location.
However, CBD is more permeable to the skin than THC and more likely to stimulate the CB2 cannabinoid receptors, making CBD the popular choice for the manufacture of cannabinoid-based topicals, and since CBD contents are much higher in commercial hemp, hemp is a viable source of CBD for use in topicals.

Kannaway Premium Hemp Oil as a CBD Topical
You can also use Kannaway Premium Hemp Oil oral applicators for custom CBD topicals, tailored to your specific potency needs.
In order to use Kannaway Original or Gold Premium Hemp Oil for topical application, it is best to blend the CBD hemp oil with a carrier oil. Kannaway BAs will often use coconut oil as their carrier of choice, but jojoba, sweet almond, or even olive oil can also be used.
For single applications, you can add your carrier oil to the desired area first, using enough to wet the skin without becoming excessively oily. Then, immediately rub the Kannaway Premium Hemp Oil into the area, blending the hemp oil and carrier oils as you do, massaging deeply into the skin. After application, we suggest covering the area with a gauze pad or wrap to keep the chlorophyll from the hemp oil from staining your clothing or furniture.
A quarter gram of Kannaway Premium Hemp Oil is enough for a small area, like a foot, knee, elbow, or hand. For larger areas, like the shoulder or back, a half gram of hemp oil provides greater coverage. When using Kannaway Gold Premium Hemp Oil, this method provides up to 120 mg of CBD or more per application, depending on the amount applied.
