While there are many options we could have chosen, we decided on a process known for being non-toxic and considered GRAS (generally regarded as safe) by the FDA-- supercritical CO2 extraction. It's how we safely extract our award-winning CBD oil to create the purest products that you can feel good about sharing with your customers.

What is Supercritical CO2 CBD Hemp Oil Extraction?

Supercritical CO2 extraction is a safe process that uses fluid CO2 as a solvent to separate one component from another. If you start your mornings with a cup of coffee, you may already be familiar with supercritical CO2! It’s the extraction process used to remove caffeine from decaffeinated coffee.

In the coffee example supercritical CO2 extraction is used to remove an unwanted component. But the process can also be used to collect specific components, such as a plant’s essential oils, terpenes, and other valuable components. 

CO2, or carbon dioxide, is generally found in nature as either a gas at normal temperatures or a solid in the form of dry ice when frozen. Supercritical CO2, however, is carbon dioxide held in its fluid state. By holding the CO2 temperature and pressure at or over their critical points, CO2 stays as a liquid.

In this liquid form, CO2 is an effective solvent for pulling out the valuable botanical extract from hemp. In this botanical concentrate, you'll find all of the beneficial compounds found in the plant, including CBD, terpenes, vitamins, minerals, and more.

How Supercritical CO2 Extraction Works

To extract CBD oil from the hemp plant using supercritical CO2, it is typically forced through finely ground plant material. This pulls the essential oils, lipids, and other valuable material out of the hemp matter.

To then remove the fluid CO2 solvent from the final product, its pressure is changed, removing its ability to function as a solvent any longer.

There are several reasons why Kannaway chooses to use supercritical CO2 for our extraction process. The first, and most important, is that it is non-toxic, so it helps protect you and anyone else who relies on Kannaway CBD products to promote health and wellness. Clean supercritical CO2 is widely used within the food and flavoring industries, and it is listed as GRAS, short for 'generally regarded as safe', by the FDA.

We also prefer supercritical CO2 because it’s safe to work with. It is non-flammable and doesn’t post any type of inhalation danger. Not to mention, supercritical CO2 is a more eco-friendly choice. While there are many solvent options to choose from, some like hexane, acetone, and butane, can cause environmental damage to local ecosystems.
