Terpenes Explained
Terpenes are the natural compounds found in the flower or bud
of the cannabis plant that provide its smell and taste. Both Broad-Spectrum and
Full-Spectrum CBD oils contain Terpenes, together with over 100 other different
cannabinoids.
What are Terpenes?
Terpenes are the natural form of the compound when
they are in a live plant. Cannabis plants contain terpenes, which are among the
most abundant compounds in the natural world. Cannabis plants contain a high
concentration of terpenes and provide the characteristic scent or smell of
cannabis.
They may play a role in the health and survival of the
plants in which they exist. Similar to that of lavender and pine, the terpenes
protect the plants from infectious germs and animals grazing. They can, in some plants, repel insects or
attract pollinators. Some terpenes provide a protective role in the plant, to
help it recover from damage, other terpenes act as part of the plants immune
system.
Isolated terpenes can be manufactured to create the
scents and flavours of everyday products such as perfumes, foods and scented
body creams and lotions.
Some terpenes have a positive effect on cannabinoid
receptors (e.g., beta-Caryophyllene, which seems to have an excellent effect
upon CB2 receptors).
Some have a stimulating effect, while others have a
relaxing and sedating effect. Some will target the brain, others target the
body, and yet others can induce sleep and relaxation.
Because terpenes produce vibrant smells, they form the
basis of many essential oils and are an integral part
of many alternative therapies, such as aromatherapy.
How do Terpenes relate to CBD?
"Cannabinoids" is the name of the compounds found in the
cannabis plant. Over 100 compounds have been identified by scientists so
far. These cannabinoids include
compounds such as cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabigeriol
(CBG), flavonoids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and terpenes.
Both a broad-spectrum and full-spectrum CBD oil
contains certain Terpenes.
Useful Definitions:
Terpenes: Natural
compounds in the flower or bud of the cannabis plant that provide its smell and
taste.
Flavonoids: Natural
phytonutrients produced by plants to provide the green colour of the cannabis
plant and protect them from bacteria, parasites, and outside threats.
Cannabinoids: Naturally
occurring compound found in the Cannabis sativa plant.
Full Spectrum:
Contains all the natural compounds found in the whole Cannabis sativa plant,
which include various other cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenes.
Broad Spectrum:
Contains all the compounds naturally found in the Cannabis sativa plant, but do
not contain any THC.
Isolates: The
cannabinoid (e.g., CBG, CBD, CBN, etc.) is extracted from all other compounds
found in the Cannabis sativa plant to create its purest form.
Compounds: Natural
chemicals.
THC:
Psychoactive compound found in the Cannabis sativa plant that produces the
“high” sensation.
