In Episode #21 of Kannaway Champions with Nick Lowery, our own Director of Kannaway Sports and NFL Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Famer Nick Lowery hosts Dick Vermeil, legendary former NFL coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, St. Louis Rams, and Kansas City Chiefs.
Mr. Vermeil led the St. Louis Rams to their only NFL title in 1999 and has been named NFL Coach of the Year two times. He is an influential leadership keynote speaker who is regularly asked to speak about his seven common sense leadership principles.
In this inspiring and educational episode of Kannaway Champions with Nick Lowery, Dick Vermeil shares with the Kannaway community his insight on leadership and how to best prepare to consistently perform at a high level.
Some of the other major lessons in the episode include:
- Be intensely involved in the details. If you’re looking to be successful, every detail matters. The smallest things can have the biggest effect.
- Leadership doesn’t always require you to always be vocal. You can make a powerful impact on your team and those around you by leading by example.
- You should try to create an environment for your team to succeed. The attitudes of your teammates are directly related to the quality of the atmosphere you create for them.
- Many great leaders are able to say a lot in very few words. If you have integrity, your team will respect when you do speak up.
Mr. Vermeil had so much leadership insight to share, that we decided to break this phenomenal episode into two parts.
We've curated a selection of some of the memorable and quotable moments from the episode:
“You know I learned a lot, and what I learned first is how to be intensely involved in the details. You never overlook anything.” - Dick Vermeil
“I always say I’m going by what I see. Not what someone else tells me. Not what I hear. I’m going on what I see every day.” - Dick Vermeil
“If they trust you to do your job at a high level and they know that you’re going to do that, they too know they may be a victim of it, and they buy into it.” - Dick Vermeil
“I started thinking about creating an environment in which a kid could be the best he could be.” - Dick Vermeil
“Keep it simple. Begin each practice with how you tie your shoes.” - Nick Lowery
“You can be successful and be miserable.” - Nick Lowery
“Winning isn’t complicated. People are complicated. Just do what you’re coached to do at the best of your ability every time you’re supposed to do it and chances are you’re going to win more than you lose.” - Dick Vermeil
