Kannaway will always work to lead the charge to make CBD and the health and wellness aspects of cannabis available to the entire world. In recent years, our family of companies has helped drive federal and international discussions surrounding CBD, all in the effort of moving further toward global acceptance.
We are humbled to be the only CBD company to present to the World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), advocating for access to CBD. These two historic opportunities have helped aid in the journey to further CBD reform and spread CBD awareness worldwide.
Advocating for CBD in Front of the United Nations
In 2017, our parent company Medical Marijuana, Inc. became the first company to address the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) about CBD.
WHO's primary role is to direct international health within the United Nations' system. The organization is responsible for conducting the medical, scientific, and public health evaluation of substances to determine the UN’s role in regulating them. This is done through the thirteen member Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD).
On behalf of Medical Marijuana, Inc.’s family of companies, executive Raul Elizalde was invited to speak at the Thirty-Ninth meeting of the ECDD, a five-day event set to explore changes to the international scheduling of 16 different substances, including CBD.
The meeting was monumental for CBD, as the special committee’s decision following the hearing of testimony could significantly influence CBD’s legality and accessibility around the world.
Raul encouraged the special committee to lift CBD’s internationally regulated status by considering it non-intoxicating and classifying it as a nutritional supplement or food. In hopes of bringing to light the many benefits CBD can have on the health, he shared the personal story of his special needs daughter Grace and her own personal CBD journey.
Roughly a month following this historic day, WHO officials announced their recommendation that CBD not be subject to international drug scheduling. If the United Nations voted in favor of the recommendation, it would have ripple effects to CBD’s legal status around the world, potentially giving greater access to the beneficial cannabinoid globally and positively impacting the health of millions.
Sharing CBD Expertise with the FDA
We were also fortunate to have the opportunity to educate the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on CBD and how it supports our body’s endocannabinoid system at a special public hearing.
In May 2019, Kannaway Founder and true cannabis industry pioneer Dr. Stuart Titus was invited to speak at the first-of-its-kind FDA Public Hearing on Scientific Data and Information about Products Containing Cannabis or Cannabis-Derived Compounds, which was meant to gather educated opinions on regulating CBD.
Dr. Titus was one of 65 speakers chosen from a pool of nearly 400 candidates because of the extensive expertise he has gathered from his years in the cannabis and CBD spaces. Dr. Titus earned his PhD from Open International University, an educational organization affiliated with the World Health Organization, and practiced as a physiologist for over fifteen years. He is an expert in cannabinoids, and the endocannabinoid system, and is regularly asked to speak at major conferences around the world.
During his testimony, Dr. Titus encouraged FDA officials to recognize the sound scientific research on the natural benefits and safety of hemp-derived CBD products. He went on to explain to FDA officials that American diets generally do not contain an adequate amount of cannabinoids, leaving most people deficient in support for a key system in our body.
We are honored to have spoken on a national stage about CBD as a supplement aimed to maintain and improve people’s wellbeing. The FDA’s CBD enforcement policy is still pending.
Kannaway and our family of companies have already helped millions of people gain access to the health and wellness benefits of cannabinoids. We continue to be just as dedicated to revolutionizing health and wellness around the world with hemp and CBD, and making the cannabis industry a force for good.
